Thirty Ways to Have Ears

Ears.

Say what?

At least 18 muscles are at work when a dog tilts, raises and rotates her ears. They can move independently of each other, but are challenging to inspect because each ear canal is L-shaped, vertical toward the jaw, then makes a 45° turn horizontally toward the ear drum.

The latest edition of the AKC’s Complete Dog Book indicates that there are over thirty terms used to describe our purebred dogs’ ear shapes and lists a few of them. We filled in most of the rest but still came up ten short. Can you fill in the blanks?

Here’s the ear shape list so far:

Bat, bear, blunt-tipped, cocked, drop (or pendant), flying, folding, hooded, prick, rose, candle flame, v-shaped, filbert, button, semi-erect, side placement, natural, hound and cropped. What are we missing?
