“What kind of dog is that?”
“That’s okay, we get that a lot.”
What a marvelous way to greet visitors to the website of an uncommon breed, and in this case, it’s the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.
The name, “Griffon” is a fairly generic term used to describe several European breeds that have a wiry coat, though the word itself is French word for Griffin (with an “i”), mythological beasts with the head and wings of an Eagle, and the body and size of a lion. Cynologists think these breeds were called Griffons (with an “o”) because wiry coats gave them beards that looked like an eagle, and therefore, made them look like a Griffin. This particular breed, however, was created in the Netherlands by Eduard Karel Korthals who wanted the ultimate walking hunter’s gun dog able to work in the polders – low-lying marshy land found in his homeland. For this reason, the breed is also known as the Korthals Griffon. Owners and fans of the breed simply call this is a smart, good-natured and eager to please dog a “Griff.”
