Wicked Smart

According to legend, the Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar began to selectively breed hunting dogs that were fast, had strong noses, wouldn’t back down from big game, and were wicked smart. Karl August’s dogs became fashionable among his fellow Weimar noblemen, and the breed became known as the Weimaraner.

As Europe’s population of predators decreased, the Weimaraner found new work as an all-purpose pointing and retrieving game bird hunter. In 1947, a Field & Stream magazine article, “The Gray Ghost Arrives,” began America’s continuing fascination with this wonderful breed nicknamed, The Gray Ghost. We’re asking you to show us your Weims!
