The Podengo

The Podengo is still popular in the Canary Islands as a rabbit hunting dog working in packs (the word “podengo” is Spanish for “hound”). Sadly, while it’s one of the oldest breeds of Spanish hound, it’s one of the most abused, in large part because of local hunting superstitions and the erroneously held belief that Podengos don’t make good pets. Some rescue groups believe a Podengo’s best hope of a stable, life long home lies outside of Spain.
