Stuart Chalmers started building mechanical models, or “automata” in 2007. One of his pieces is named, “Bess Dog Automata,” which is a a model of his dog, Bess. The model was based on a design by Aquio Nishida in his book Automata: Movable Illustration. The box is built from mahogany, the mechanism, oak, and brass rods create the movement.Considering that all moving parts are hand-made, we think he did a decent job of capturing the fluidity of a sighthound.
