Much of what we know about purebred dogs of the past can be found in artwork and vintage photographs. We love this antique photo of a beautiful African-American woman and her American Staffordshire Terrier on a photo post card that dates from 1910-1918. What, do we wonder, was the dog’s name? Did they go for walks? Did she give him treats under the dinner table?
The photo is one of 115 antique photos in a variety of settings found in the book, “Picturing Dogs, Seeing Ourselves: Vintage American Photographs” by Ann-Janine Morey.
