One the earliest lessons many of us have in learning about our purebred dogs is how a dog’s function can determine its conformation: What is the dog supposed to do, and how does this purpose impact how the dog looks and is built. It’s the old “form follows function” principle also associated with 20th century modernist architecture and industrial design (note clever segue that goes from dogs to furniture). Industrial designer, Paolo Salvade, applied this principle when creating a bench he named, “Ugo.” Made using a cedar wood log, “Ugo” is Salvade’s homage to the Bassett Hound, another notable example of form following function.
