Though the Western translation of the word, “Basenji” is “wild dog from the bush,” in Africa, they’re referred to as “dogs of the Villagers,” “wild dogs,” or our favorite, “m’bwa m’kube m’bwa wamwitu,” or “jumping up and down dogs,” in reference to their inclination to jump straight up to spot their quarry.
