Thanks to “Lassie,” the color long associated with the Collie is sable, but guess what? The breed comes in four colors. The colors can range from a light golden tan to a rich mahogany color, while the tricolor is black, white and tan. Blue Merle can range from a pale, silvery blue coloring, to a darker gray color with black body spots of various sizes. The fourth color is predominately white with either sable, tri or blue markings, usually on the head. Traditionally, all Collies are marked with the white collar, chest, legs, feet and tail tip, and sometimes, white facial features called a “blaze.” You should also know the with the exception of coat, the breed standards for Smooth and the Rough Collie are identical. Collie friends, we encourage you to post pictures of your dog below (not on Facebook) and mention what color we’re looking at?

Abby & Willow are both sable collie (rough)s, and as with most sables, they are getting darker as they get older
On a side note, they also both carry the tricolour gene 🙂
My Sable Smooth boy, eight years old this month. Pulled from a Kansas shelter at 18 months. Titled in herding and obedience, but is really just the best dog ever. He has raised so many puppies and helped so many fosters.
