The Baying Fox Terrier

When we write, Baying Fox Terrier,” think oxymoron (a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction).  The phrase refers to dogs like the Parson Russell Terrier, a breed that was bred to follow hounds and go to ground after a fox. Their raison d’être was to hold the fox “at bay,” ‘which lead to the description, “baying fox terrier.”
