The Patterdale, a working terrier known for its tenacity, toughness, and courage, dates back some one hundred years to Yorkshire and the Lakes Region of Northern England where it was named after a village in Cumbria where the dogs were common. The breed was first brought to America in 1978 and is currently recognized by the Patterdale Terrier Club of America, the United Kennel Club, the American Rare Breed Association, the Continental Kennel Club, National Kennel Club, American Pet Registry, American Canine Registry, and the Canine Kennel Club.

Working ability is highly valued in this breed, and since Patterdales have to be be able to pursue quarry through small tunnels, “spanning” is called for when evaluating a dog.
