A Short Standard for an Ancient Breed

By some estimates (okay, Alexa’s), the Saluki is 6,017 years and one month old, and yet the entire Saluki standard takes up less than 3/4 of a page. The most precise wording has to do with size: Dogs can range in height from 23 to 28 inches (a five inch difference), and bitches can be smaller. The rest of the standard is a bit more vague, and intentionally so. We find Robert Cole’s explanation for this to make sense:  Precise wording could produce a generic dog limiting its versatility, as well as the breed’s ability to chase down and dispatch quarry over deep sand or rocky terrain.

Saluki friends, do you agree?
