The First Breed-Specific Dog Publication

According to “American Working Terriers” by Patrick Burns, the first breed-specific dog publication anywhere was a magazine devoted to Fox Terriers. As purebred dogs go, Fox Terriers are classics who’ve changed little since the late 18th century. In fact, in 1790, Colonel Thornton had a portrait painted of his dog, “Pitch,” a Smooth Fox Terrier showing us that the breed has changed little since then. The Smooth Fox Terrier holds the distinction of being the first breed in the fox terrier group to be officially recognized by England’s Kennel Club in 1875.
