And Your Little Dog Too

Not until 1977 did the AKC recognize the different ear carriages of the Norwich Terrier and Norfolk Terrier as separate breeds. A good way to recall which ear goes with which breed is to simply remember that a Norwich’s ears are pointy like a witch’s hat.

Speaking of witches, Margaret Hamilton, who famously played the Wicked Witch of the West in the “Wizard of Oz,” was a Norfolk Terrier,Norwich Terrier,Carl Spitz,Wizard of Oz,Margaret Hamilton,Cairn Terrier,Terry,Dachshund owner. It’s an enduring urban legend that “Toto,” ultimately portrayed by a Cairn Terrier named Terry, was originally supposed to have been played by Hamilton’s Dachshund, Otto.” It’s not true.

As the real story goes, when MGM announced that it was going to produce L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, Carl Spitz, a Hollywood animal trainer, noticed that the little Cairn Terrier he’d gotten when her original owners failed to claim her was a dead ringer for “Toto” based on sketches throughout the book. Spitz began teaching the terrier named “Terry,” all the tricks mentioned in the book, and two month later, he got a call from MGM for an audition. By the time Terry and Spitz met with the producer, he had reviewed 100 dogs a day for the past week.  Spitz famously said, “Here’s your dog, all up on the part.” Terry could already sit up, speak, chase a witch, and catch an apple thrown from a tree, and she took a shine to Judy Garland. Terry won the role of Toto without a test.
