Austria’s High Altitude Hound

Meet the Tyroler Bracke (or hound), an ancient breed developed to hunt in the high altitudes of Austria’s mountains, and known since the Middle Ages. These dogs were the basis of other German and Austrian breeds, and what they brought to the table was a superb nose (especially in high, snowy elevations), a tireless work ethic, a fine “tongue,” strong body, and  extraordinary commitment, but an otherwise easygoing temperament. Many regard the breed as among the purest of game hunting hounds.

Said to be descended from Celtic Hounds, Tyrolean Hounds were used by Emperor Maximilian I to hunt hare and fox, as well as track wounded game. Selective breeding began in 1860, and the first specimen was exhibited in Innsbruck in 1896.

The Tyrolean Hound was recognized by the  FCI in 1996, and the United Kennel Club in 2006.
