The Bakelite Greyhound

It’s possible you may have polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride in your home, and if you do, you just might have a valuable collectable on your hands.

Also known as Bakelite, this was the world’s first synthetic plastic, and it was designated as a National Historic Chemical Landmark in 1993 by the American Chemical Society. Bakelite has been used to make everything from kitchenware and jewelry to kid’s toys, pipe stems, and firearms. Lots of dog breeds have been rendered in Bakelite, but one of our favorite interpretations has been this Greyhound umbrella handle with Greyhound ribs! Bakelite has a museum, and your favorite breed just might be there!
