The Blonde Bombshell’s Dog

If you were an incandescent screen siren known as the Blonde Bombshell and could own any dog you wanted, what would you have?

You might have a Dachshund like Jean Harlow did in the late 1930s. She had one she named, “Nosey,” but sadly, “Nosey” became “orphaned” when his mistress died at only 26 years of age. Her passing was so sudden that rumors abounded about botched abortions, over-dieting, murder – even blood poisoning from hair bleach. In reality, she died of a cerebral edema brought on by renal failure. As a teenager, she’d contracted scarlet fever which may have led to post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. A complication was highly compromised kidneys that slowly failed over time. Dialysis, kidney transplants, and antibiotics were unheard of as yet in 1937.

When she died, “Nosey,” by then an old dog, went into the care of William Powell to whom she was engaged at the time. You may know William Powell as “Nick” from “The Thin Man” series (and Asta’s owner).
