Breeds That “Can’t” Swim?

On the same day we came across an article that categorically stated that brachycephalic dogs can’ t swim, we came across a video of a Boston Terrier doing an “Ester Williams.”

Some breeds don’t do well in water, it’s true, and they’re typically “top heavy” breeds with large chests and small hindquarters. We advocate putting a canine life jacket on most dogs (depending upon the circumstances), but there’s always that one dog that makes liars of us all.  Got one of them?

  1. In my part of the country, the media is reporting that a lot of people are drowning or nearly drowning trying to rescue dogs that have fallen through ice or otherwise run afoul of water. The media admonishes people never to attempt a dog rescue in water since dogs can survive/swim much better than you can and will eventually find their way to shore. (Almost implying that they rarely, if ever, drown.)

One outlet even goes so far as to say that their capabilities in water are 10 times better than that of humans. Given your article on the fact that some dogs can’t swim well, was wondering if you have any data or expert opinions supporting or refuting the media’s claims.
