Briard Owners?

Recently, we mentioned that an adult Cesky Terrier can be any shade of gray, but an adult Briard can be any uniform color, period (except white). We’ve read that the journey to that color among the owners of tawny colored pups, however, inspires them to say, “If you don’t like the color of your tawny Briard, just wait until tomorrow — it will be another color.”

We’re hoping Briard owners help us out here, since they are the breed experts, so tell us if we have this straight: Tawny puppies are born black or a very dark red. The coat lightens to tawny by the time the pup is three or four months of age, and by the time he or she is about two years old, the coat has paled further to a light tan. As the adult coat comes in, the color again changes to deep gold or red, and it can continue to change for another four or five years. By then, many tawny Briards have a dark ears, and face, a dark tail, and may have dark hairs (called an overlay) in the coat on their body.

Two tawnies parents can only produce tawnies puppies, but because black is dominant over tawny, two black parents can produce tawny puppies.
