Craigie Aitchison’s Bedlingtons

Craigie Aitchison was an artist who belonged to no particular school of art, nor any fashion trend. He was said to be an artistic loner who painted what he loved, mostly landscapes of Scotland and Italy, and paintings of the Crucifixion, one of which hangs behind the altar in the chapter house of Liverpool Cathedral.

Bedlington Terriers were dear to his heart. Aitchison bought “Wayney,” the first of his Bedlingtons, from Crufts in 1971. He continued to own Bedlington Terriers over 28 years, and they featured in a number of his paintings, such as the one seen here , “Dog in Red.”  Aitchison died in 2009 at the age of 83.
