It’s your hint about next week’s Purebred of Interest: A man who would become famous general once owned this breed. It’s not the Greyhound, the first documented dog belonging to General George Custer. “Byron” was acquired while he and his wife, Libby, were stationed in Hempstead, Texas, though the Custers would own several Greyhounds. Libby was only thirty-four years old when her husband died, and she would live another fifty-two years on an army pension. To supplement her income, she lectured and wrote articles and books about her experiences on the frontier. In Tenting on the Plains, Libbie shared many amusing stories about “Byron,” and disclosed that he was quite jealous of her and disliked sharing Custer with her.
