Artist’s Thoughts: I adore dogs. I like to think about what they think about—especially when looking at the back of their heads. I do this with my dog, Alfie, all the time. Stare at the back of his tiny little head and wonder what is going on in there? I like to think his brain is similar to mine. Full of memories and anxieties.

In these chaotic times my anxiety is at an all time high. I spend 24/7 with Alfie and I know that he’s picked up on the stresses of the world. This year has made me incredibly thankful for him for providing me with stability in routine and unconditional love. It makes me wonder if they take on the heaviness of humanity in addition to the complexity of their own realties.

In this piece, I wanted to capture life and the chaos of dogs. The colors they see, the moments they remember, and the emotions they feel every single day. I wanted to portray their instincts, silliness, laziness in a way that also shows beauty and diversity. I chose watercolors for the challenge but to also convey softness. I used colored pencils to add detail and saturation. So here it is. I’m quite proud of it.
