The sign for the “Dog and Bacon” pub in Horsham, Sussex displays a Border Collie absconding with a slab of bacon. While it’s suggestive that someone will be going without part of their breakfast, the name is said to be a corruption of “Dorking Bacon,” a nearby hill visible from the pub on a clear day. That settled, we wondered what a “dorking bacon” was.
The pub is close to the centre of Horsham, and the old cottage next door was the original pub. Apparently, the “Dorking Beacon”was a bonfire on the site of Horsham common, the last remains of the common now a triangular green area just next to the pub.
