Painting Details: Chewie has always been the perfect model for my artwork. My objective for art is to paint what you love, and Chewie is someone that I truly love. Although I have painted and drawn my dog many times, it is still a challenge portraying what his personality is like. I focus on his expressive eyes, wondering what he sees and thinks and feels. I try to express his curiosity and playfulness. I even try to render his naughty side which makes him that much more likable and relatable.

Unlike most Cardigan owners, my husband and I chose not to tape Chewie’s ears. Just as the day he was born, he still retains his puppy like appearance with his beautifully floppy ears. I wanted to share an unconventional looking pure breed dog. A countless number of times I have been asked what mix he is. Part Border Collie, part Dachshund, part Corgi? No, he is indeed Chewie, our Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the dog that captured our hearts.

Artist’s thoughts:  My two year old Cardigan Welsh Corgi named Chewie is one of the loves of my life. I have a fondness for the dwarf dog starting with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and its affiliation with the Queen of England. When deciding to get a dog of my own, instead of choosing the more common of the two types of Corgis, I chose the more unknown version. I love the larger ears and expressive tail of the Cardigan. To say that the Cardigan is a large dog in a smaller dog’s body is an understatement. Even at this very instant, Chewie is demanding some quality “fetch” time.  Cardigans have a loud personality that truly outshines other dogs. The volume and depth of their barks are surprising when heard for the first time. One of my favorite parts of Chewie’s figure is his prominent chest bone. When standing, running, or sitting, he looks like the regal dog he is. Cardigan Welsh Corgis are a rare commodity that needs to be shared with the world. Their beautiful brindle coats, large expressive eyes, and overall aura is something to be admired.
