The Flying A Gasoline Spokesdog

Back in the 1960s, “Axelrod” was the “spokesdog” for Flying A Gasoline, a national service station business owned by Tidewater Petroleum. The perpetually worried-looking Basset Hound appeared in a “Worry” campaign accompanied with phrases like ‘When it comes to your car…oooh, do we worry!'” and “The house that worry built.” The ads ran in magazines like Saturday Evening Post in 1965 and in several television ads for Flying A.

In 1966, Flying A stations on the west coast were sold, the new east coast company became the Getty Oil Company, and Axelrod was retired. In 1969, the brand became Getty. which was acquired by Texaco in 1984.

  1. I have the plastic dog bank in good to excellent condition only missing stopper for bottom. Does this have any value

    • Honestly, Mary, we don’t know as we’re not experts on dog banks, but a good way to find out is to list it on Ebay. Take a good picture, but upfront about the missing stopper, set a minimum price that you would accept for it, and see if you get any “bites.”
