From Popular Tinsel Town Dog to Rare Breed

Look who owned a Sealyham Terrier back in the day:

It’s not a surprise that a Hollywood legend owned a Sealyham Terrier, so many big stars did, including Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davies, Elizabeth Taylor, Agatha Christie, Cary Grant, and, of course, Alfred Hitchcock who was seen walking two of his Sealyham Terriers in a cameo appearance in the movie, “The Birds.”  Sealys were the dog of choice for Tinsel Town’s biggest stars during Hollywood’s Golden Era, but now, we write with concern, they’re rarer than lowland gorillas and Panda Bears.

In 2012, two Sealyham pups – “Rapunzel” and “Cinderella” – were included in the bio-pic “Hitchcock,” starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Dame Helen Mirren. The same two dogs showed up as six year olds at a screening of the Hitchcock classic, “Rear Window,” and their appearance should serve as inspiration to the rest of us looking for ways to boost the profile of our rarer or vulnerable breeds. Skye Terrier owners, for example, could rent a hall and play the movie, “Greyfriar’s Bobby,” followed by an appearance of real live “Greyfriar Bobbies.”  How many more of us could use vintage movies as a way to introduce our breeds to the public?

  1. Terrific article. Thank you for spotlighting my favorite breed. I’m in the Midwest, doing my best to act as an exhibitor and preservation breeder of Sealys. We do enjoy sharing our Terriers at every opportunity.

    • Thank you for the work you do, Lisa. Our breeds are all so precious, and it takes each of us to protect them for the benefit of all!
