The Gargoyle Mastiff

The magnificent Neapolitan Mastiff (or Mastino Napoletano) is worthy of a double take, but with its loose skin, enormous size, and lumbering gait, few “bad guys” intent on robbing an Italian estate stuck around to take one. This peaceful and steady dog was designed to look imposing and frighten intruders, and for this reason, it has been nicknamed the “Gargoyle of the Estate,” or the Gargoyle Mastiff.  Not surprisingly, Hollywood often cast the breed that can weigh over 150 pounds as the ultimate guard dog (think “Fang,” from the Harry Potter movies). Neas have also appeared in Babe: Pig in the City, American Gangster, Dragonheart, and Belly. Despite its size and suspected clumsiness, the Neapolitan is loose-limbed and capable of jumping into action with incredible speed when required, but it is the breed’s loyalty and devotion that has earned the affection of life-long owners.
