German Shepherd Dog Color

When it comes to color genetics, we always defer to breed experts, so we’re entering tall grass, here: To our knowledge, the very first registered German Shepherd Dog was sable in color. German Shepherd Dog coat colors in order of dominance are golden sable, black and tan, bi-color, and finally, black. Sable is never recessive, and a pup can’t be sable unless at least one of her parents is a sable. Black is completely recessive to all other genes, so both parents must give a black gene for a puppy to be black, and the only color that dog will pass on to its puppies is black. GSD friends, our feelings aren’t hurt if you have corrections to make, we’re all here to learn.
