Givenchy’s Dogs (and a Rottweiler He Made Famous)

The famous couturier, Hubert de Givenchy, had a huge impact on interior design and couture, and it’s probable that he would have made his mark no matter what. Still, it was a big boost when actress Audrey Hepburn needed dresses for her role in the film, “Sabrina,” and tapped Givenchy to design them.  Over the course of their lifelong friendship, Hepburn repeatedly turned to Givenchy to dress her for both her private life, and in movies, and she became so closely associated with the house of Givenchy that its feminine, polished, feminine, and superbly tailored look became her own. She would go on to wear Givenchy in the movies, ” Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Funny Face,” and “How to Steal a Million.”

Givenchy died this past March, 2018 at the age of 91, and during that long life, he was a dedicated dog owner. Whether it was the Afghan Hounds he owned back in 1955, or the pair of Labrador retrievers that came later and were always around, allowed on every sofa at Le Jonchet, his home, it was said that the most important things to Givenchy were Philippe (his partner), his dogs, his friends, and then his houses.

Each beloved dog was buried at Jonchet, and each had a Lalanne bird placed on its tombstone to keep watch. Those were surmounted by bronze canine sculptures by Giacometti.

Though it may seem very “un-Givenchy,” it was Givenchy who debuted Riccardo Tisci’s famous Rottweiler print during his Fall 2011 men’s runway show. The T-shirt was worn nearly ad nauseum by celebrities from Kanye West and Kendall Jenner to Liv Tyler and Rihanna who helped make it an iconic fixture of the fashion landscape at the time, though Rottie owners were probably less delighted with the portrayal of their breed as an aggressive creature. Tisci told the menswear glossy, GQ,  that he got the idea from a “boy scout book,” and added, “It’s not a violent picture. For me, it’s a sweet dog. It represents power and sweetness.” It was also out of reach for most people. Neiman Marcus sold the t-shirt for $1,055.  The same  Rottweiler t-shirt appears on Givenchy’s website, this one “only” $550,00. Buy two!
