Artist’s Thoughts: While I mainly paint in oil, I like to chose the media that best complements the subject. Lately I have been experimenting with Yupo as a substrate for watercolor paints. It adds even more spontaneity to an already unpredictable medium, translating into a energy within the work and emphasizing the unwavering optimism a well loved dog.
For this project, I read the prospectus and researched breeds within each class, noting my favorites, but also choosing breeds that I had not encountered. The larger breeds are at the top, or “back” of the painting, and for the most part, the breeds become smaller as as they go down through the painting. Besides this, their placement was determined by differences in their personalities and hair texture. They were fun to paint!
