It Starts with the Head

Though some folks get the Cavalier King Charles mixed up with the English Toy Spaniel, there are differences between the two, and they start with the head, the focus of this post. Correct head type is an essential element of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (seen at the left), and because most people notice a dog’s face first, central to their attention (literally) is the nose.

At the center of an English Toy Spaniel’s well cushioned face is a short snub nose, and deep, well defined stop. It’s the direct opposite of the Cavalier’s in which the length from base of the stop to the tip of the nose about 11⁄2 inches, longer than the English Toy Spaniel’s. Its stop is moderate, and it’s neither filled nor deep.

With a high and well domed skull, the English Toy Spaniel (seen at the right) has a spherical, if not globular head. The Cav’s skull is slightly rounded, and there is no dome.
