The Jaunty-Aired Dog

To our knowledge, the Bull Terrier is the only breed whose proper movement is “jaunty.”  From the AKC breed standard: “The dog should move compactly and in one piece but with a typical jaunty air that suggests agility and power.” Our favorite description of the Bull Terrier, however, is that the breed is really a three year old child wearing a dog suit.

We think the incomparable “Rufus” demonstrates ‘jaunty’ in the video below.  He was, of course, Ch. Rocky Top’s Sundance Kid, the only Colored Bull Terrier to have won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Rufus held the record for being the top winning Colored Bull Terrier of all time with 35 Best in Shows, 128 Group Ones, and three National Specialty Wins. When Rufus retired from the show ring, he became a much-adored therapy dog. We lost Rufus in 2012 when he was 12 years old:
