The Komondor’s Name

The word “Komondor” appears in a Hungarian document dating back to 1544 in the “History of King Astiagis” by Kákonyi Péter, in Hungarian, but there seems to be differences of opinion about the meaning of the name. One source says that “Komondor” comes from the Maygar word for “serene.” Another says that in Sumerian, “Ku Mund Ur” means “Lord of the Dogs.” Still others maintain that “Komondor” comes from the name, “Koman-dor,” meaning “dog of the Cumans.” Having unwittingly wandered onto a Komondor’s property in Hungary once, we think the real meaning of Komondor could be, “Yes, sir.”
