It’s time for our first hint about next week’s Purebred of Interest (and it’s not the breed in this image): This breed can be talkative and has a distinctive singing voice.
Very few dogs (as in none) have been described as a truly living, breathing, four-legged fossil, but the New Guinea Singing Dog is, in large part because these dogs were so isolated for so long. These clever dogs have been known to inhabit the island of New Guinea since the Stone Age. DNA analysis suggests that the NGSD differs from modern dog breeds more than those breeds differ from each other. Some researchers believe that additional studies may eventually lay the ground work for the breed’s separation from the Australian Dingo through the designation Canis familiaris hallstromior Canis lupus hallstromi.
We’re asked all the time what a New Guinea Singing Dog sounds like when it’s singing. Listen for yourself.
