Artist’s Thoughts: According to the AKC, the Labrador Retriever breed ranks as #1 in popularity. People just love a Lab and there are a long list of reasons to support this devotion. Labs are typically a large, huggable dog that are known for their friendly and outgoing nature. They have well earned their title as members of the “Sporting” group, as they LOVE to play catch and will endlessly run, jump, or swim to retrieve a ball, stick or toy. As well, they play an important role as loyal, working companions to hunters. The English Lab is currently involved in two research projects to see if they can “sniff out” and detect coronavirus infections. The plan is to begin using these trained animals in airports to screen and detect the illness in potential travelers. Labradors are commonly used in hospitals, and hospice environments as healers. Not only is this dog a hardworking and dedicated fellow, the White English Labrador is a bit silly, fun loving, and sociable animal that is great with adults and kids alike, and has therefore earned the status as the #1 family dog. I chose to depict this large portrait as front and center to convey the soulful spirit and larger than life personality of this most deserving dog.
