Yesterday, we introduced you to “Max” and “Chloe,” stars of a series of Purina Puppy Chow ads from 2015. While everyone agrees that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy named “Chloe” (her real name, by the way) is felony-cute, one NPDD reader opined that the commercial did nothing to disabuse people of thinking that the place to go for a dog is a pet shop. Debate about pets sold in shops is a vigorous one, and not one to have here in a short “hit and run” post. The reader’s point, however, provides a good segue into the importance of heritage breeders who screen their puppy families more than “Max” probably was in the first commercial. Heritage breeders know the pluses and minuses of their breed, and not only evaluate whether their breed and a prospective family will be a good match for each other, but conduct “home checks,” to make sure things are on the “up and up.”
