Morocco’s Other Native Breed

The Sloughi is sometimes cited as the only dog native to Morocco, but that would be incorrect.

The Aidi, also called the Atlas Mountain Dog (or, as a 1963 standard inaccurately wrote, the Atlas Sheepdog which was corrected in 1969) originated in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco where it performed protection duties for the semi-nomadic tribes of the area. An attendant trivia question could be to name a sheepdog that isn’t a sheepdog; the answer, of course, would be the Aidi which was never used to herd sheep, but to protect them as a Livestock Guardian Dog.

These rugged, affectionate and protective dogs noted for their strength come in highly variable colors that range from sandy, fawn, and white to red, brindle, and black. They can appear as tricolors, and often with a distribution of patches.

There is an Aidi Association of American which seeks to establish the breed in the US and Canada, and while the breed isn’t recognized by the AKC, it was accepted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 2003 (which listed it as the Atlas Mountain Dog (Aidi) to cover all bases) and is recognized by the United Kennel Club.
