Only One AKC Breed Calls for This

There are many ways to be beautiful, and if there is one thing to be said about the 21st century, it’s that our perceptions of what beauty looks like have expanded beyond a rigid model. There was a time this young lady would would have turned heads, but only because her white hair (with dark roots, no less!)  is at odds with her youth. Neither was creative hair color “a thing” back in the day. That said, there is something quite stunning about dark eyes framed by white hair,  but not everyone can pull it off.

A dog can always pull it off. Cue the American Eskimo Dog.  Not for nothing is the breed nicknamed, the Dog Beautiful.  Most of us are familiar with the breed’s fluffy snowy-white coat (which is preferred), but the AKC breed standard allows for white with biscuit cream color, as well, and in a show ring, the biscuit cream color shouldn’t outweigh “consideration of type, structure, or temperament.”  Add an Eskie’s inky black or dark brown nose, dark to medium brown eyes, and eye rims to match, and this is a beautiful face.

There is one more thing that makes the Eskie’s dark eyes pop, and we cite our young lady with the white hair as an example of how white can beautifully offset dark, and visa versa. Can you spot anything unique In the photograph below that might make us say that?

American Eskimo Dog, color, eyelashes

Perhaps you spotted the white eyelashes?  It is unique in dogdom. In fact, at the time of this writing, the American Eskimo Dog is the only AKC recognized breed with a standard that calls for eyelashes to be white.

We think it’s a good look for the breed. On people, maybe not so much.
