The Scandinavian Trim

There are lots of fanciful names given to features in our dogs, and while “rosettes” and “pompons” describe the rounded “clump” of hair on the hip of a Poodle groomed in a Continental clip, another word is “muffin.”

The Poodle, in addition to being a fabulous breed, is also one that allows for tremendous grooming creativity. The Continental clip is one of the clips allowed in AKC conformation shows for Poodles that are a year and older, but we came across another clip called the “Scandinavian Trim” that, while not an AKC acceptable show trim, is one of the most popular Poodle trims in all of Europe. This stylish trim with lots of “European flair” is also referred to as the ‘Second Puppy Clip’.  Head coat can be left puffed out, or pulled into a topknot, and the coat is allowed to be longer, but very low on the legs, and showing only a bit of the paw.  It provides a lovely shape to the dog without exposing any skin. The downside is that hair growth can cause the clip to loose shape in no time. A photo essay on how this trim is performed can be seen here.

  1. Quite a vigorous pooch! I have a much more sedate cream colored toy female What simple patterns are most popular them now?

    • Great question, Elaine. We defer to the groomers out there to answer your question with more authority than we have on the subject, but we’re dimly aware of several trim options, including the Kennel Clip (which, we’d guess, is the most popular with owners who don’t show their dogs), and a variation of this, the Lamb Clip where the coat is left longer. There’s the Bikini Clip and the Dutch Clip. So many choices!

  2. I would like to buy a purebread Toy Poodle as I lost my beautiful friend after 17 years. He had a ScandInavian heritage so was elongated and athletic which was perfect as I lIve in the country with lots of space. Please let me know what I might consider. Kind Regards ,Jenny Carden 0401270022
