So Much Time, So Little Change

As with most Hungarian dog breeds, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact date of the Mudi’s origins other than that it was certainly known in 1815 when the image on the left was drawn. Pedigreed breeding and classification of dogs only started in the second half of the 19th century, while wars and foreign occupations laid waste to historic records after that.  That said, many experts believe the Mudi may be the oldest of the Hungarian sheepdogs, possibly dating back to before the 15th century. It’s remarkable how little the breed has changed between the two images!
