Painting Details:  The Clumber Spaniel was sunning herself while waiting for her picture to be taken. I painted the background in reds and yellows to reflect the heat and create a nice tension against the luxurious coat. The image of the Clumber Spaniel celebrates the diversity of purebreds. The distinct character and unique personality of this dog is shown in a whimsical pose with a textured background that plays against there beautiful, thick coat.  This was a new breed I was introduced to when I was commissioned to create 3 separate portraits. I was so taken with these animals I painted a 4th for my own collection.

Artist’s thoughts:  My life always had a dog playing an important role in my development. And this is true today ,although it is in the form of painting.  I have had several different purebred breeds in my life, my deepest connection was to my last dog, an Anatolian Shepherd.  When we moved to Colorado and purchased a home in the country with several acres, I knew I needed a dog companion.  I visited several shelters and didn’t find the connection I was looking for. One sunny day I went to the Longmont animal shelter. I had never been there before so didn’t know what to expect, but I had hope. I enjoy large breeds so that was where I headed.  I desired a dog that was observant and wasn’t barking for attention. There was only one dog not barking and just observing. He watched me carefully  as I came down the aisle.  He didn’t cower but stood right up to the front bars.   We took an experimental walk, I went home and brought my husband back and I filled out the paperwork.  I had some dog training experience but went one on one with a gal who knew more. I am a stickler for a well trained dog that can be put into any social situation and behave himself because I am a small person and I knew I had to be the alpha dog.  It was a 10 year romance. He died with dignity and the knowledge of my love and devotion.   I can still feel his fur beneath my hands.
