The Statesman Who Wrote Poor Puggy-Wug

Oh, what is the matter with poor Puggy-Wug?
Pet him and kiss him and give him a hug.
Run and fetch him a suitable drug.
Wrap him up tenderly all in a rug.
That is the way to cure Puggy-Wug.

Would you have ever guessed that Winston Churchill wrote that little ditty? As the story goes, Winston Churchill’s youngest child, Mary Churchill had a Pug she named “Punch.” When Punch became quite sick, Mary and her sister, Sarah, were disconsolate which, in turn, distressed their father. Churchill wrote a little poem to comfort them, and it’s said that all three sang it together to the ailing Pug. Mary, later to become Lady Soames, wrote later that it worked, and that Punch improved.

  1. I had always greatly admired Sir Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher since doing a paper on both in school. I never knew of Churchill’s pug until many years later AFTER obtaining a male pug and giving him the full name and later a female and of course the same there. Both fit the personality of who they were, tough, tenacious and stubborn. This little song shows the love Churchill had for Punch too. My Winston lived almost 18yrs and “Maggie” 16. Winston guarded my nephew as a infant as he slept ( now 21) Robert called him Winslow when he began to talk and it stuck. This is the reason why ‘‘tis poem is so precious to me.
