Two different terriers have been identified as the “Terrier of Wales,” and it will come as no surprise that one of them is the Welsh Terrier. Highly popular in Britain in the 1700 and 1800s, “Welshies” were used as hunters that dashed into small dens and caves to flush out the animals that lived there. They were exceptionally good at this, and while the breed is still used for hunting and tracking, the Welsh Terrier is more of a family dog now.
What may be more unexpected is that the Sealyham Terrier is the other one. The breed developed by a Welshman, Capt. John Owen Tucker Edwardes, was named after Sealyham, Haverfordwest, Wales, Edwardes’ estate. In the past, Sealys have been owned by Princess Margaret, Humphrey Bogart and other famous people, but now they are rarer than tigers. In our minds, it’s inexplicable that two such terrific breeds are now listed as “vulnerable breeds” in their country of origin. If you own a breed with origins in the United Kingdom origins, is it also a vulnerable breed? You might be surprised. Find out here. #SaveOurBreeds
