The “Best Mascot in College Sports”

In 1997, the Bulldog, “Uga V” appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated which declared him the “best mascot in college sports.” Them’s fighting words when one considers all the other canine mascots: Texas A&M’s Reveille, Yale University’s “Handsome Dan,” the University of Indianapolis’ Greyhound, UCONN Huskies, the University of Tennessee’s Bluetick Coonhound, “Smokey,” UC Davis’ Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, “Pint,” and others. Still, one must give credit where credit is due. The “Uga” line of Bulldogs may certainly be the longest running mascot since all the Bulldogs serving as “Uga”  have been part of a lineage of English Bulldogs owned by Sonny Seiler since 1956. Ten dogs have carried the name “Uga” (which comes from an abbreviation for the University of Georgia), each one a descendant from the original “Uga,” and often the offspring of the predecessor. Many “Ugas” have retired as part of pre-game ceremonies, a “passing of the collar” tradition and when the new Uga begins his reign. During these events, fans typically chant, “Damn good dog,” a tradition dating back to the very first Uga I.
