The Breed Owned by Musical Icons

You may not recognize “September Song” by its name, but this American pop standard has been recorded by everyone from Lou Reed and Ella Fitzgerald to Frank Sinatra and even Jessica Lange (who sang it for the cult favorite, American Horror Story: Freak Show).

Still not ringing a bell?  Take a listen below and see if Willie Nelson’s interpretation jogs a memory:

The tune was composed in a matter of hours by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Maxwell Anderson, but it was hardly the only song Weill wrote that you would recognize. Try this one:

As it happens, Kurt Weill was married to Lotte Lenya whose name showed up in the second to last stanzas of Mack the Knife:

Now Jenny Diver, ho, ho, yeah, Sukey Tawdry
Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky’s back in town

Though she was a singer, most of us remember Lotte Lenya in her role as Rosa Klebb in the classic Bond film, From Russia with Love.

What did Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya live with as their dog of choice? An Old English Sheepdog named “Wooly, given them by Moss Hart in 1945.
