The Breed that was Exhibited at a St. Bernard Dog Show, and Wasn’t a St. Bernard

The breed was shown in a show ring for the first time at a dog show for St. Bernards in Germany in 1895.

Think we’re talking about St. Bernards? Nope.

We’re talking Boxers! It was Boxers who were first exhibited at a show in Munich for St. Bernards when three Germans, Friedrich Robert, Elard König, and R. Höpner, decided to stabilize the breed and put it on exhibition at a dog show (the aforementioned show for St. Bernards).  The next year, they founded the first Boxer Club, the Deutscher Boxer Club which went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in 1902, a detailed document that has not been changed much to this day.

Boxers have held steady as the one of the top ten most popular breed of dog in the United States for the fourth consecutive year, hardly a surprise to those who know and love this breed.
