Poor Cyrano de Bergerac. Though he is a talented swordsman and a great wit, the burden of an astounding nose prevents him from revealing his true feelings to the beautiful Roxane. It never occurred to us to equate Edmond Rostand’s sad character with one of our breeds, but we found more than one source that referred to the Basset Hound as the Cyrano of Dogs. A great and sensitive nose and tragi-comic droopy face belie a cheerful heart brimming with poetry and delicacy.
