It’s incredible to us that there is a sporting breed out there that is so driven by instinct, so hardy, so tough, that it will break through ice to get to a fallen bird. This would be the Chesapeake Bay Retriever who, at one time, was also called the Brown Winchester, Otter Dog, and Gunpowder River Dog. Naysayers of the breed will call it mean, stubborn, and one part wolf, one part mule. Shoulder shrug. As we see it, these people are just not suited to own a Chessie, and that’s fine – – – as long as they never own one. Fans of the dogs see what we see: A dog with incredible courage, loyalty, vigor, and a dog that surpasses all others in negotiating cold water and ice. Got a Chessie? Share your Chessie!
