The Italian Farmer’s Greatest Asset

Each breed – the one by your feet, for instance, has a proud heritage in the country of its origin. To discount that is to dismiss the people who developed, worked with, and protected the breed.

For years, the Cane Corso’s power, courage, agility and tracking ability made the dog valuable on hunts for wild boar, stag and bear. With the decline in big game hunting, the breed became a companion andworker of the Italian people, and the most highly valued asset an Italian farmer could have. The dogs protected property, drove stock to market, and doubled as a guard dog for homes and estates. With the transformation of the agricultural structure in many areas of Italy, this breed was in danger of extinction. However, with the help of some talented and caring dog lovers in the mid 1970’s, success was made in procuring as many good subjects as possible. Selective breeding began and the Cane Corso was given a new birth. If you own a Cane Corso – let’s see your glorious dogs!
