The Mayflower Dogs

We love the humor of “Not to Standard’s” breed standards, and use the artist’s whimsy to mention something quite cool about this breed. Of the 102 passengers aboard the Mayflower, one brought along his two dogs, 25-year-old John Goodman, and while history doesn’t tell us their names, we know that one of them was a Springer Spaniel (the other, a Mastiff). Sadly, Goodman died during his first winter in America (1620), but his dogs were cared for by the other Pilgrims.
